Xavier Wines Shirley Rose is the brainchild of Xavier Goodridge who worked with Pat Sullivan. During a stint running a wine bar in London, Xavier Goodridge travelled to Beaujolais and fell in love with the romanticism. With his path set he studied Viticulture, he took a job at Bress and started making his own wine. After experimenting with soils and sites he has decided Deans Marsh, near Geelong is the place that suits what he wants. Which is to raise healthy (organic) grapes and then allow them to express their varietal characteristics and the sites they represent. That means as little interference as possible. Xavier is a young winemaker shaping raw but refined minimal intervention wines from sites in Victoria. He spent several years studying viticulture and vinification and working at various wineries abroad and local ones like Bress Winery and with Patrick Sullivan in Gippsland before starting his own project a couple of years ago. Xavier produces wines that are simple and authentic while expressing both the site they grew on as well as the varietal characteristics of the grapes.
Xavier Goodridge is making some really interesting and damn delicious natural wines from around Victoria, and this Shirley Rose is one that will really set you back in your seat. It’s made from 100% Yarra Valley Cabernet – not something you see much in modern Rosé – but by gee does it work here. There are plenty of dry Rosés out there that sacrifice flavour for light, pinky colour. Here, Xavier crams in the flavour and builds body with cleaver winemaking, whilst keeping it delicate and refreshing. It’s a balancing act that not all can achieve. Texture and tannin, fruit and freshness – this is a beauty!
A full-throttle natural Rosé made from 100% Yarra Valley Cabernet. As interesting as it is delicious!
