The Hedonist Reserve Shiraz is a gorgeous deep red with crimson hues. It’s bouquet is fragrant and pretty, bursting with fresh red to dark fruits, dark chocolate with a cinnamon lift. On the palate you’ll find it to be generous and complex, yet soft, supple and silky. An abundance of red berries continue through, augmented by fine, velvety oak tannins ensuing a long, luscious finish. The Hedonist Reserve Shiraz is a wonderful addition to any meal, but we think it is absolutely perfect alongside a hearty summer barbecue!
The fruit for the Hedonist Reserve Shiraz comes from an organic/biodynamic certified vineyard from Kangarilla, McLaren Vale. Producing a slightly cooler climate expression of McLaren Vale fruit due predominantly to its higher altitude. The vines are shoot and bunch thinned, with particular focus on pruning and vertical shoot poition trelising. Fermented with indigenous yeast after harvest – no crushing. The ferment was lightly pressed after 15 days on skin in open top fermenters. Fermentation was completed in French Oak foudres for 18 months. Minimal Sulphur added. No fining.
The Hedonist Wines adopt a minimalistic approach to winemaking, believing that good wines are “made in the vineyard.” Great care is taken in the estate-grown certified biodynamic vineyard.
The emphasis of biodynamics is to promote soil health and maintain a balanced and diverse population of soil biology. In keeping with their holistic philosophies, the vineyard is managed with the absence of pesticides and herbicides. Undervine slashing and mid-row cover-cropping are methods utilized for weed control. All organic matter from the vineyard, including stalks and grape marc are composted together with cow manure to produce a super potent biodynamic fertilizer, which is returned to the vineyard. In addition to biodynamic practices, we are in constant pursuit of other sustainable practices that ensure retention of moisture, for example, mulching with straw and monitoring the soil for nutrients, etc.
