PolOpuesto Qué Grande sos! Vino Criollo 2016
The PolOpuesto Qué Grande sos! Vino Criollo 2016 is produced in the “Finca Serrera”, Uco Valley in Mendoza – Argentina. With a desire to stray from Malbec and the typical international varieties, Pol searched for more authentic Argentine varieties and came upon this vineyard which, as far as he has found, is the only vineyard in the Uco Valley that has retained any of the unfashionable Criolla varieties. The owner couldn’t say what year the vineyard was planted—because it’s older than him—but believes it to be from the late 1950s. The trunks of the vines are as thick as trees and the pergola-trained canopy is high overhead, so there is a marvellous feeling of being in a forest. Criolla Grande is the third most produced grape in Argentina, yet it goes unappreciated by winemakers, and in 2016 he knew of no one that made a varietal wine from it. And of course, the challenge to do the opposite, the unusual thing, is often what tickles the fancy of polOpuesto.
This is a chameleon wine because it can drink like a white, a red or a rosé, and so is quite versatile for food pairing. This is a great wine to drink without Food, with low alcohol and a water-like drinkability, it goes down easy and doesn’t bring you down with it.
“Tasting notes have a hypnotic power of suggestion… I prefer not to tell others what they’re supposed to taste in their mouths as they try my wines.”
