Patrick Sullivan Baw-Baw Chardonnay 2018
Patrick Sullivan, one of the most exciting young winemakers in Victoria, and one of the names now synonymous with the new wave of wine in Australia. Patrick was born and raised in Victoria, where he grew up on the family farm. Patrick makes his wine from organic and biodynamically grown vineyards and his wines are made with minimal intervention and in small batches. All grown up and married to the beautiful Megan, they live and make wine on their own farm in the Strezlecki ranges in West Gippsland. The wines are inspired by emotion, a moment in time and a sense of place.
The wild-haired Patrick Sullivan is a farmer first, winemaker second. His pride and joy is his vineyard in the Strezleki Ranges in the Gippsland G.I. of Victoria. On this plot of land, Pat farms with organic principals alongside Bill Downie, one of the most revolutionary winemakers of his generation. Bill takes the Pinot Noir from the vineyard, Pat takes the Chardonnay and a few other bits and pieces. The wines are un-tinkered with, fermented in neutral vessels with little or no sulphur and are made to express their special site and the vagaries of vintage.
This incredible 100% Chardonnay from Patrick Sullivan is a blend across both North and South facing slopes at the Bull Swamp Vineyard, Fermented in a variety of vessels, nicely settled then bottled unfiltered and unfined. Pure-fruited, some nice lees and barrel influence leading to a richer style of Chardonnay with purity and clarity. The South facing component always gives the strength and shoulders of the wine with the North facing component giving all of the class. Aromatically it gives a generous helping of fresh stone fruit and cream leaning back into a very generous yet structured palate.
