Nittardi BEN IGT Toscana 2018 has a striking colour. It has a straw yellow appearance, but alongside that, it has a hue of brilliant green nuances. On the nose, this Italian wine is intense, It has a floral aroma in huge volume, white flowers and a sweeter, pollen aroma. This is perfectly complemented with notes of ripe peach, fresh lemon skin, as well as a mix of exotic fruits. A wine that is hugely interesting and complex on the nose! The palate is equally as complex and interesting. The lemon comes through in a refreshing citrus fruit taste with prickly acidity, along with with the contrasting smoothness of the exotic fruits, the combination makes for a medium-bodied wine and extremely well balanced. It has a notable and long-lasting finish with a slightly salty note. The grapes for BEN grow in the wineries Maremma property called Mongibello Delle Mandorlaie which is located between Scansano and Magliano. It is only 11 km away from the sea at an altitude of 250m, where the soil is mostly a sand-based surface with granite stones and clay underneath. Once picked, the BEN grapes go through a soft pressing after being subject to a period of a few hours of maceration in the pneumatic press. The juice then goes through a temperature-controlled, cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks, which is then followed by 4 months in stainless. There is no malolactic fermentation in the process of BEN. The Nittardi estate has a rich and interesting past, starting in 1183. Once owned by Michaelangelo, a letter to his nephew shows that whilst painting the Sistine chapel he requested wine be sent to him instead of new clothes! He also sent The Pope some wine as a gift. In this tradition the first bottles produced every year at Nittardi are sent to The Pope… and if it is good enough for him it’s good enough for us.
