Matthias Warnung Feldstück Riesling is produced by the Matthias Warnung winery, which is located in the Kamptal Valley region of Austria.
Matthias graduated in 07 and then hopped over to the winery of Markus Huber, who had just established himself at the top of the Austrian wine scene. After a few months, he decided to continue on the path of many young Austrian winemakers and move to New Zealand for a few months. In 2011 he returned to the Kamptal, bought two hectares of vineyards with old Rebmaterial of Grüner Veltliner and Blue Zweigelt and brought his first vintage in the barrels. By 2013, the wines had time to mature in large wooden barrels. The result was two Green Veltiners, of which one of them mash-fermented, and an unbelievably deep-roasted Rosé from the Blue Zweigelt – each of them made for absolute ecstasy at Viniculture. His wines struck like a bomb, were sold out within a short time and sparked true enthusiasm in the wine scene.
Some would argue Riesling on skins is heresy. However, Warnung’s Feldstuck Riesling may change your mind. 16 days on skins & whole bunch – this wine again shows Matthias smart and elegant winemaking. The current release is 2014, a colder vintage, this wine has all the angles you crave but balanced with ripe aromatics and mouthfeel from the maceration. Colossally Moorish.
