Svensk Ek is created in harsh weather conditions and dramatic seasonal shifts that have left their marks on the trees, making them very durable. Before the trees become barrels staves are cut and then dried for at least a year. The barrels are then coopered by hand and heavily toasted on the inside, enabling the wood fibres to give the whisky more character. They are constantly developing the ancient craft to make it even better. One example of their many innovations is to age a great deal of our whisky in smaller barrels thereby extracting more flavour.
When Mackmyra opened for business in 1999 they were the only whiskey distillery in Sweden and also the most northerly one in the world. At that time their distillery was a very small-scale business using a copper boiler with a capacity of only 100 litres. It was in this pilot distillery that they developed their recipes. At the same time, the friends proved to the outside world that it is possible to create an excellent malt whisky using the ingredients and under the conditions that they have in Sweden. The Mackmyra Distillery is still a young company compared to some of its Scottish siblings. All began in 1998 when a group of eight friends went on a skiing trip. They discovered their common weakness for single malts and wondered why there is no Swedish whisky on the market. In 1999, just one year later, the first Mackmyra distillery was set up and the production of spirit started. With it, the history of Swedish whisky was initiated as well. Ever since hundreds of recipes were tried and the best were chosen to constitute the Mackmyra range.
Svensk Ek has a spicy character giving notes of sandalwood, dried ginger, black pepper, roasted oak barrel and herbs to our whisky. These spicy characteristics are complemented by fruity undertones with hints of vanilla and toffee from oak barrels, previously used to age Bourbon. Our Swedish oak barrels are made of oak from southern Sweden where oak trees have grown for centuries.
