Grgich Hills Estate Chardonnay 2013 from the Grgich Hills Estate, is perhaps difficult to pronounce but easy to appreciate. To begin with, all of the vineyards on the estate are farmed naturally, without artificial pesticides or herbicides. All Grgich Hills Estate wines are certified organic.
Mike Grgich first gained international recognition at the celebrated “Paris Tasting” of 1976. Then, in a now-historic blind tasting, a panel of eminent French judges swirled, sniffed, and sipped an array of the fabled white Burgundies of France and a small sampling of upstart Chardonnays from the Napa Valley. When their scores were tallied, the French judges were shocked: they had chosen Mike’s 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay as the finest white wine in the world. Mon Dieu! The results stunned the international wine establishment and immediately earned Mike a reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in the world.
With a reputation of being the King of Chardonnay, Mike Grgich creates his Chardonnay without malolactic fermentation to preserve a fresh character and natural acidity. The wine presents a display of so-called Fiji apple, honeydew melon and some cashew nut aromas and flavours. An impressive wine, by an impressive winemaker, with some impressive flavours that go well with fresh seafood, grilled chicken or pork and even with creamy cheeses.
