La Muselle, The Crozes-Hermitage by Xavier Mourier is a beautifully textured, spicy Syrah from the Northern Rhone. The palate offers typically spicy, rich, dark berry aromas with notable blackberries and red cherry. These aromas come in many levels and in great depths. On the top notes, there is the characteristically peppery spice along with a hint of violets. There is also a light aroma of provincial herbs on the top notes of this wine.
La Muselle gets is great depth and texture from the winemaking process extracting the best from the grapes and producing a wine that shows off the Rhone and its Syrah grapes to their potential. The grapes for this Crozes-Hermitage are sorted twice, once in the vineyard and once in the winery once they arrive. The wine is pressed, fermented and is kept in contact with the skins and subject to daily pump-overs to enhance the flavour moving from the skins into the juice.
This is a wine that has ample of varied food pairing options. A Shoulder of lamb served with confit puree with herbs or even a simmered coconut cassoulet or beef cheeks braised in Creole.
The Syrah is aged for 10 months before bottling. 50% in tank and 50% in oak. This balance gives the wine rounded, full-body taste and softens the tannins. This is the role of the oak. But by only using oak for 50% of the time, the winemaker is perfecting the balance – maintaining the vibrant fruits that the grapes show.
