The Anima Negra vineyard was founded in 1994 by Pere Obrador and Miguel Angel Cerdà together with Francesc Grimalt a local oenologist who has a profound knowledge of the varietals and topography of his island. Felanitx is located to the South East of the island and the surrounding vineyards and situated on poor, stony soil with very little rainfall and intense summer heat. The winery produces its wines in the old country estate of Son Burguera with the building dating back to the 13th century.
The wine AN 2 (Anima Negra 2) is called after the vineyards (some 12 hectares) from where the Callet grapes are harvested and means, in Mallorquin, “The dark place”. Generally, Callet is not considered to be a particularly great varietal but in the hands of the makers of Anima Negra, it’s another story.
Anima Negra AN 2 is a dark ruby in colour, with expressive toasty, smoky, kirsch and raspberry aromas. On the palate, this medium to full-bodied wine is rich yet elegant, nicely layered, and has a long, clean finish. Drink this unique wine over the next 4-6 years.
The notoriety of this wine increases year upon year due to the praises are given by Jancis Robinson, Robert Parker and many others.
