The Bergström Old Stones Chardonnay…what more do I need to say really?! A less expensive version of a vintage white burgundy, but for a quarter of the price, this wine is simply amazing! When John and Karen Bergström began Bergström Wines, they wanted to start a business that would become a legacy for their children and pay tribute to John’s agricultural Swedish upbringing. With these dreams in mind, the couple moved from Portland to Dundee, where they planted the Bergström Vineyard on a gentle, 13-acre, south-facing slope overlooking the wide expanses of the Willamette Valley. Bergström’s story began in 1999 when Josh and Caroline returned to the Willamette Valley where his parents had been sowing and ploughing under rich cover crops to revitalise the soil and prepare the land for the vines. During his first year back from France, Josh planted vines and purchased some grapes from other vineyards to make the first vintage of Bergström wine. Bergström Wines consists of five estate vineyards totalling 84 acres that span across four of the Willamette Valley’s best appellations: The Bergström Vineyard, Silice Vineyard, Winery Block, Gregory Ranch and Le Pré du Col. Each estate vineyard is farmed without the use of harsh chemicals, systemic or fertilizers, and the winery produces approximately 10,000 cases of ultra-premium and extremely sought-after wine each year, including two Chardonnays and nine different Pinot Noirs.
The estate has more than 36 acres under vine, all of which are organically certified. Additionally, since 2000, the farming has been biodynamic and the results have impressed with an extra degree of vitality and freshness visible. The Old Stones Chardonnay shows funk and ripeness. It’s pale white gold in colour with some saffron, passion fruit, lemon candy, ginger, sweet oak spices and cinnamon. It has a fantastic mineral structure!
Organic and Biodynamically Certified. This estate is farmed without the use of Chemicals.
