Alta Alella Mirgin Laieta “Gran Reserva” Cava de Paraje 2014
The producer, Alta Alella has put its main emphasis on providing this wine with such a spectacular packaging because unlike other Cava wines they produce, the Laietà has a high proportion of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties, blended with the local Pansa Blanca (Xarel-Lo). The wine is made from a selection of the best estate grapes, and is produced using the traditional method (fermented in its bottle) and bottle-aged on lees for 30 months before disgorgement. No oak is used. Being a Brut Nature, no sugar is added in the dosage before bottling to provide the pure expression of the fruit and wine.
The Cava de Paraje, rather than Brut Cava is a new classification that’s been awarded to a dozen houses in the region. Vines must be at least 10 years old, with lower yields, and all wines must be brut, extra brut or brut nature, and bottle-aged on the lees for at least 36 months.
“An organic Gran Reserva cava made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pansa Blanca. The nose has a lovely toasty aroma, with a hint of mushroom and baked apples. This follows through onto the palate with a good zesty note on the finish”. – Dawn Davies MW
