Dr Loosen Red Slate Dry Riesling 2017 an estate that has been in the Loosen family for 200 years which also possesses some of the countries top vineyards sites. Vineyards from Bernkastel, Graach, Wehlen, Urzig and Erden all show different characteristics. Due mainly to the differences in soil, slopes and vine age. Dr Loosen focusses on expressing Riesling, from red slate, blue slate, volcanic soil sites on some of the steepest vineyards in Europe. Dr Loosen Mosel Riesling shows what the Mosel can produce generally with a bone dry palate and a unique richness. Lately, Ernst Loosen has been flying the flag of traditional dry styles of Riesling. Spurred on through his discovery of much older German Rieslings and their ability to age so well. This translates to production methods where only healthy grapes make the grade. Spontaneous fermentation is promoted as is extended maturation of the Cuvee in old wooden casks on the lees. The Dr Loosen’s Red Slate Riesling 2017 is the dry counterpart to the classically fruity Blue Slate Kabinett. It is produced with fruit from estate-owned vineyards in the red slate soils in the villages of Erden and Ürzig. Farmed specifically for producing a dry wine, it is fermented with native yeasts in 3000-litre old oak casks. The old oak helps to soften the acidity. They then allow a tiny amount of oxygenation that adds texture and greater complexity to the wine. Red Slate Riesling Dry has an intense minerality that is warm and enveloping, with a floral, spicy, citrus blossom aroma and a harmonious palate. The dry style is ideal for classic continental cuisine. A lot of aroma upfront, apples, blossoms with a touch of lemon and lime. Palate is dry with an elegant ripeness and a lick of honeyed spice. Nice texture throughout and a really lovely floral length. The finish is persistent and scented, very quaffable!
